# Terminals

Every agent can run in a terminal of its own that you can watch and type into from the dashboard.

**Two drivers.** The installer offers one; you can also set it by hand in `~/.harnsy/config.yaml`:

YAML

```yaml
terminal:
  driver: tmux   # or: conpty
```

`tmux` (3.1 or newer; Linux and macOS; runs without a desktop) or harnsy’s own terminal host `conpty` (Windows 10 1809 or newer always; nothing to install; also offered where tmux is missing). The default is none: nothing opens, but messages, teams and the dashboard still work. Agents open in harnsy’s own tmux server, not yours, each in its own tab.

**Watch and type.** Open an agent’s live terminal in the dashboard and switch between “view only” and “typing”.

> Warning
>
> Typing sends your keys to this agent only, as if you sat at its keyboard; give typing only to people you would give a shell.

For Claude Code and Codex agents there is also a chat view with tool calls, commands and edits as they happen. In any terminal window this shows all agents of the node in one console: the list on the left, the live screen on the right (Ctrl+\] then ? for keys):

Shell

```bash
harnsy term
```

**After a reboot.** harnsy’s service restarts at login, but the agent windows go with the terminal. With Settings › Agents and teams “Restore stopped agents when harnsy starts” turned on (it is off by default), harnsy brings agents back once the terminal answers (up to 3 minutes): the ones you stopped with “Stop all agents” and, after a sudden stop such as a reboot or a power cut, the seated agents that were running; not those you put to sleep. If harnsy was down more than 24 hours, Home asks you instead. With it off, nothing comes back by itself: use “Restore” on Home or “Wake” on the agent. A sleeping or offline role opens the same session again with “Wake”: same name, seat and context. A second process is never made for a session that is already open.

**No terminal driver.** harnsy opens no agents; schedule wake-ups and project starts report `no_terminal`.

Since harnsy 0.1.
